WHAT IS BREAST REDUCTION?
Breast reduction surgery (reduction mammoplasty) is a medically indicated procedure that reduces the size of a woman’s breasts, decreases the weight on their shoulders, chest, and upper back, and also creates a more contoured lifted appearance. Additionally, this procedure can help reduce breast asymmetry, which will result in a more balanced aesthetic.
With this procedure, women will feel more confident in themselves and how they look. No longer will they worry about the unwanted attention and stares from strangers or the way their large breasts get in the way and keep them from the activities they love.
After a breast reduction, you’ll be able to enjoy living a life free of back and neck pain caused by your overly large breasts. In short, you’ll be able to live the life you want.

HOW IS BREAST REDUCTION SURGERY PERFORMED?
Breast reduction surgery is performed under general anesthesia, so you will not feel any pain or discomfort.
Once the anesthesia has been administered, Dr. Goldberg will make the incisions in your breasts. She will remove excess breast tissue and fat; if needed, liposuction may be used to remove stubborn fat on the side of the chest and armpit areas.
The remaining breast tissue and fat will be reshaped to give a natural aesthetic appearance. Any excess skin will then be removed, and the nipple and areola will be repositioned. Lastly, the incisions will be closed.
GalaFLEX® scaffolding (a supporting mesh material) will be added to act as an internal bra to provide better structure and support.
WHAT INCISIONS ARE USED FOR BREAST REDUCTION SURGERY?
There are two types of incisions commonly used for breast reduction surgery:
- Lollipop incision, where the incision is made around each areola and then extends down the front of the breast, from the areola to the bottom of the breast
- Anchor incision, which starts as a lollipop incision but adds a horizontal incision at the bottom crease (inframammary fold) of each breast
HOW LONG WILL SURGERY TAKE?
The actual breast reduction procedure can take two to four hours to complete, though you should plan on being there for longer to account for the time it takes to administer the anesthesia and for the anesthesia to wear off.
HOW LONG DOES BREAST REDUCTION RECOVERY TAKE?
You will be sore for the first few days after your breast reduction procedure. This is completely normal and to be expected. Medication can be taken to lessen any pain you may experience. Additionally, you will have some swelling and bruising in the surgical areas for the first week or two, though these will dissipate on their own.
While you will be given more exact postoperative instructions, you will want to plan to rest your body for two to four weeks. During this time, you should get up and move around a little to help speed up the recovery, but you should keep your activity to a minimum: slow walks and light stretching.
During the first month of your recovery, you should not wear underwire bras, opting instead for a surgical bra or compression garment. While you will have scars, since this is an invasive procedure, your breast reduction scars will fade over time.
In total, it usually takes patients six weeks to fully recover from their breast reduction surgery and feel back to normal, though with a lighter weight on their chest.
WHAT RESULTS CAN BE EXPECTED FROM BREAST REDUCTION SURGERY?
After your breast reduction, you will have more manageable and smaller breasts. You will be able to wear the clothing that you’ve always wanted to wear but couldn’t. You will also find yourself feeling lighter and freer without any of the pain and discomfort that you may have felt with the larger breast size. For most women who underwent breast reduction, it will be the first time in their life where they can wear a top without a supportive bra.
More than anything, though, you will feel a sense of comfort in your own skin and the way you look. You’ll now be able to go out and enjoy the activities that you could only watch from the sidelines before.
HOW MUCH DOES A BREAST REDUCTION COST?
Most major medical insurance plans cover breast reduction procedures. However, the medical policy may have weight requirements of breast tissue being removed (depending on the patient’s BMI and Body surface area).
Furthermore, the patient will need to have persistent clinical symptoms for more than six months. This includes:
- Pain in the neck
- Pain in the shoulders
- Pain in the upper back
- Painful kyphosis documented by X-rays
- Pain/discomfort/ulceration from bra straps cutting into shoulders
- Skin breakdown (severe soft tissue infection, tissue necrosis, ulceration hemorrhage) from overlying breast tissue
Some patients will elect to undergo breast reduction without involving their medical insurance. Like any cosmetic surgery, the price of a breast reduction varies with each patient and procedure. The price is dependent on various factors, including the extent of the treatment and whether any other procedures are being combined with breast reduction.
At your consultation, you will be provided an accurate cost estimate for the procedure.

CAN I COMBINE MY BREAST REDUCTION WITH OTHER PROCEDURES?
While many women who struggle with overly large breasts choose to simply undergo breast reduction surgery by itself, other women choose to combine their reduction with other surgical procedures so that they can achieve even more dynamic results. One of the most common combination procedures is liposuction of the chest. Other procedures that can be combined with breast reduction surgery include:
FAQ's
What is breast reduction surgery, and how can it help patients in Glendale?
Breast reduction surgery, also known as reduction mammoplasty, is a procedure that removes excess breast tissue, fat, and skin to achieve a breast size more in proportion with your body. For patients in Glendale, this surgery can provide relief from physical discomforts such as back, neck, and shoulder pain, which are common for those with larger breasts. It can also improve posture, alleviate skin irritation, and boost confidence by providing a more balanced appearance. If you're considering breast reduction, it's important to consult a board-certified surgeon to discuss the best approach tailored to your specific needs.
Am I a good candidate for breast reduction surgery in Glendale?
Good candidates for breast reduction are typically individuals who experience physical discomfort due to the size of their breasts or who feel self-conscious about their breast size. If you’re in Glendale and are physically healthy, not pregnant, and have realistic expectations about the outcome, you might be an excellent candidate. It’s essential to discuss your health history, current symptoms (e.g., back, neck, or shoulder pain), and desired results with Dr. Mytien Goldberg to determine if this procedure is right for you. Every patient’s needs and body are unique, so a personalized consultation is key.
What happens during the breast reduction surgery procedure in Glendale?
Breast reduction surgery is typically performed under general anesthesia. Dr. Goldberg will make carefully planned incisions, usually around the areola and extending vertically to the breast fold. Excess tissue, fat, and skin are then removed to reduce the size and reshape the breasts. The nipple may also be repositioned to ensure a natural, youthful appearance. The surgery takes about 2-4 hours, depending on the extent of reduction needed. After the procedure, you'll be monitored in a recovery area before being discharged to begin the healing process. Detailed aftercare instructions will be provided to ensure proper healing.
How long is the recovery time after breast reduction surgery in Glendale?
Recovery time after breast reduction varies from patient to patient, but most people can return to normal activities within 4-6 weeks. In Glendale, Dr. Goldberg provides clear post-operative instructions that include avoiding strenuous activities for the first few weeks. During the initial recovery period, you may experience swelling, bruising, and discomfort, which will gradually subside. Wearing a support bra and attending follow-up appointments are critical to ensure proper healing and to address any concerns. Full results may take several months to become apparent, as the breasts will continue to settle into their new shape.
What are the potential risks and complications of breast reduction surgery in Glendale?
As with any surgical procedure, breast reduction surgery carries certain risks, such as infection, bleeding, scarring, or an adverse reaction to anesthesia. In rare cases, patients may experience changes in nipple sensation or difficulty breastfeeding. However, these risks are minimized when you choose an experienced and skilled surgeon like Dr. Goldberg. During your consultation in Glendale, Dr. Goldberg will review your medical history and explain the potential risks in detail, so you can make an informed decision and feel confident moving forward with your surgery.
Will breast reduction surgery leave visible scars in Glendale?
Breast reduction surgery typically involves incisions that may leave scars around the areola, vertically down the breast, and sometimes along the breast fold. However, the scarring tends to fade significantly over time. Dr. Goldberg takes great care to minimize the appearance of scars by using advanced surgical techniques and placing incisions in less noticeable areas. While scarring is a natural part of the healing process, patients in Glendale can expect their scars to become less visible over the months following surgery. Additionally, scar management treatments can help reduce their visibility.
Can breast reduction improve the appearance of asymmetrical breasts in Glendale?
Yes, breast reduction surgery can be an effective solution for addressing breast asymmetry. In many cases, one breast may be significantly larger than the other, causing discomfort and self-consciousness. Dr. Goldberg can remove more tissue from one side to achieve a more symmetrical appearance. This procedure is especially beneficial for those in Glendale who experience disproportionate breast sizes that lead to physical pain or emotional discomfort. During your consultation, Dr. Goldberg will assess your individual needs and tailor the surgery to restore symmetry and balance.
How can breast reduction surgery improve my quality of life in Glendale?
For many patients in Glendale, breast reduction surgery provides both physical and emotional benefits. By reducing the size of the breasts, it alleviates chronic pain in the back, neck, and shoulders, making daily activities much easier. It can also reduce skin irritation or rashes caused by excessive sweating beneath the breasts. On an emotional level, breast reduction can improve self-confidence, body image, and overall quality of life. Many patients report feeling more comfortable in their clothing and engaging in physical activities like exercise without the burden of large breasts.
Will breast reduction surgery affect my ability to breastfeed in Glendale?
While most patients are able to breastfeed after breast reduction surgery, there is a possibility that the procedure may impact breastfeeding, especially if the nipple and areola are repositioned. However, Dr. Goldberg takes care to preserve the milk ducts and nipple sensation as much as possible. If breastfeeding is a priority for you, it’s important to discuss this with Dr. Goldberg during your consultation. She will work with you to ensure that your surgery plan supports both your aesthetic goals and future plans for breastfeeding.
How do I prepare for breast reduction surgery in Glendale?
To prepare for breast reduction surgery, Dr. Goldberg will provide you with specific instructions, including dietary guidelines and recommendations on stopping certain medications (like blood thinners) before surgery. In Glendale, you may be asked to undergo pre-operative tests to assess your health. It’s essential to arrange for someone to drive you home after surgery, as you will be under anesthesia. On the day of your surgery, wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing and avoid wearing any jewelry or makeup. Following these preparations will help ensure a smooth surgical experience and a successful outcome.
