Breast Reduction Procedure

Although there are a number of reasons a woman might need to have a breast reduction procedure performed, the most common reason is back and neck problems caused by excessively large, and heavy breasts. Other common complaints are shoulder grooving due to heavy bra straps, and self-image problems related to feeling out of proportion or abnormal.

This procedure involves removing excess skin, fat, and glandular tissue to reduce the size and weight of the breast, and make it firmer and less prone to sagging. If the patient is unhappy with the size of her areolae, they can also be reduced in size at the same time. The end result is smaller, firmer, and most importantly lighter breasts that are more proportionate to the patient’s body, and have a more aesthetically pleasing shape.

Because this procedure is designed to alleviate serious physical problems, most health insurance plans will cover it. Make sure to inform your doctor if you intend to file an insurance claim so that she can make sure to have all of the appropriate documentation available for you. This is a procedure that is generally not performed on girls under 18 years of age, although in extreme circumstances, by excessively large breasts are likely to result in serious discomfort or developmental issues, exceptions can be made.

A consultation with and examination by your surgeon will help determine if you are a candidate for this procedure, and if so which reduction technique is most likely to produce the desired results.

Breast reduction also known as reduction mammoplasty. Large breasts can result in a number of physical problems such as back and neck pain, shoulder grooving from the weight of bra straps and significant limitations in one’s physical ability to exercise. My patients complain most about neck, shoulder pain, and laying flat due to the heaviness of the breasts on the chest. Breast reduction surgery not only improves a woman self image but also these physical problems.

This procedure removes excess breast fat, glandular tissue and skin from the breasts, making them smaller, lighter, and firmer. It can also reduce the size of the areola, the darker skin surrounding the nipple. The goal of the procedure is to give the woman smaller, better-shaped breasts that is proportional to her body and to alleviate the discomfort associated with overly large breasts.

Is breast reduction covered by insurance?

Since the main goal of breast reduction surgery is to alleviate the physical problems associated with very large breasts, most medical insurance will cover the cost of the surgery. Prior to surgery, your doctor will need to document your medical symptoms and submit the request to the insurance.

When can I have breast reduction surgery?

In most cases, breast reduction is performed when a woman’s breasts are fully developed around 18 years of age. However, in rare cases, breast reduction can be done earlier if the large breasts result in significant serious physical discomfort, i.e. pain requiring medication, skin problems, and skeletal development problems. The best candidates are those who are mature enough to fully understand the procedure and have realistic expectations about the results.

What are the breast reduction techniques?

There are 2 main breast reduction techniques, Weiss pattern reduction (anchor incision reduction) and vertical reduction mammoplasty (lollipop or J incision reduction). The two reduction techniques differ in the length of scar and the amount of skin removed. Dr. Goldberg offers both reduction techniques to her patients depending on the breast size. The keys to a beautiful breast reduction surgery is to remove excess breast fat and glandular tissue in the right areas of the breast without leaving the breasts deflated, without upper pole fullness and cleavage. Dr. Goldberg will guide you to see which breast reduction technique is optimal for the patient.
